Martial arts legend Bruce Lee ruled the world with his impeccable combat knowledge. In fact, he bridged the gap between the east and west by popularizing various fighting styles. However, one might have noticed that Lee never believed in showing off his talent. Despite being a Hollywood star, the Sensei was guided by the principles of how martial arts kept him grounded. 

During his iconic interview with Pierre Berton in 1971, Lee revealed many shades of his life. In that interview, he also explained how martial art was a guiding force for him that kept him sane despite achieving so much success.

In the Pierre Berton Show in 1971, Lee was asked if he sees martial arts as a combination of sports, philosophy, and art. The Little Phoenix answered the question expressing his love for martial arts. He stated that “martial art means honestly expressing yourself”. However, it is a complicated process in the real world.

Furthermore, Lee expressed , “ It is very difficult to do I mean it is easy for me to put on a show and be c**ky and be flooded with a c**ky feeling and then feel like pretty cool or and all that or I can make all kinds of phony things”

Lee stated that he could have been pretentious, to please people around him. But to express himself, he has to be true to himself. The JKD founder also emphasized that people should honestly train to develop strong reflexes so that they can have a command of their actions. This way, they can easily perform their actions without making mistakes.

Lee always believed that martial art was for self-defense and not violence. Hence, showing off was not something he abided by. A great example of it is his famous quote on it.

A powerful and learned man like Bruce Lee never intended to stir drama with his knowledge. In fact, Lee’s fighting style was always defensive and only became offensive when needed. His famous quote on flaunting oneself was“Showing off is the fool’s idea of glory.”

Lee never used his style to attack his opponent. The JDK founder’s famous one-inch punch was created so the people could defend themselves if needed. In fact, many Bruce Lee followers detest the idea of the present MMA pattern that mostly promotes violence. Contrary to it, Jeet Kune Do is considered a more peaceful and defensive martial art form.
