Some people are content to be in the shadows. Others seek the limelight. Understandably, Dave Portnoy features in the latter category. Whether he sought it, or it found him, Portnoy once again took centre stage. This time, it was due to a moment in game four of the 2023 MLB World Series. The match was contested between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers won 11-7 to edge ahead 3-1 in the World Series. That left them one win away from what would be a first World Series title. It was not all plain sailing, though. There was an incident during the game. A man rushed onto the pitch and had to be escorted off it. One detail about the man caught Dave Portnoy’s eye. He wore a black hoodie with the words “Team Portnoy” emblazoned on the front in white.

Dave Portnoy took to Twitter to share a clip of the invader being escorted towards the stands. The offending individual was half-carried by five men from the stadium staff. Portnoy added the words, “Team Portnoy – Only the finest of people.” Simultaneously, part of the announcement made via the PA system could be heard in the background. It was being announced that anyone attempting to do the same would be ejected from the stadium and placed under arrest.

Despite the severity of the consequences awaiting him, the individual in this case was all smiles. He nodded along as the announcement was made and also stuck his tongue out once it was done. The crowd roared as he was led out. He also won an admirer in Dave Portnoy. It is impossible to discern from the clip which inning he chose for that invasion. Only one player was seen in the same, someone from the Rangers’ roster whose name was not visible. That was far from the only disruption, though. The rest of the crowd also caused problems.

Texas Rangers inches away from history despite the crowd’s antics
That pitch invasion was far from the only shenanigan to interrupt the game. The fans in Phoenix, Arizona threw paper planes out onto the pitch. Announcements made to stop their disruptions went unheeded. Even so, the Texas Rangers landed on the cusp of history following game four of the World Series. They extended their lead to 3-1, after tallying 6-5, 1-9, and 3-1 scores in the three games prior to this. In this game, they hit three home runs to the Diamondbacks’ one. One more win is all that is necessary to award them their first World Series title.
