The world of Hollywood is fleeting, but it captures our imagination. Perhaps even more than sport. And in a throwback to July 2020, a time when the world was still reeling from the onset of a global pandemic, there emerged some fascinating news. Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez and his then-fiancé Jennifer Lopez were eyeing up a bid to get into sports ownership, and reportedly, so were Will Smith and Jada Pinkett at the time. Rumor has it that the feud developed to a degree where the two couples were even upset with each other.

Having announced their engagement only a year prior in 2019, A-Rod and J-Lo were the talk of the town. The two were also interested in owning a sports team together. With a bid to buy the New York Mets having been rejected, they had turned their attention elsewhere. As it was A-Rod’s hometown, that presented an ideal opportunity. One they weren’t about to let pass them by. Unfortunately, Hollywood power couple Will Smith and spouse Jada Pinkett-Smith were interested too.

Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez feud with Hollywood power couple

The two pairs went head to head after having identified Miami as the ideal investment destination.

While A-Rod and Jennifer Lopez were fresh off a rejected bid to acquire the New York Mets, they hadn’t given up. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, on the other hand, had a reported sum of nearly $200 million set aside to invest.

But the Smiths weren’t through yet. While confirming their interest, they reportedly drew the ire of A-Rod and Jennifer Lopez. Reportedly, the couple was unhappy that they were faced with the competition. The rumors, though, were never confirmed.

The reason for the feud

Moreover, as the opportunity had presented itself, Rodriguez was eager to invest. And his reaction to seeing such an option disappear was reportedly not very positive.

However, nothing material came of the conversations, and A-Rod has since gone on to invest in an NBA franchise as an alternative. Partnering with e-commerce tycoon Marc Lore, he formalized a minority stake in the Minnesota Timberwolves and their WNBA franchise, the Minnesota Lynx, in 2021.

That’s not the only difference either. Rodriguez has since broken off the engagement with Jennifer Lopez in early 2021. Perhaps it is best they didn’t buy an ownership stake together after all.
