With little baseball being played at the moment, we enjoy what little we can get. More so when college baseball throws up gems like these. The lockout rages on; as much as the Majors deny us live-action, the NCAA seems to have stepped in at least temporarily. And that was on full show during the showdown between Oakland and New Mexico State University, where a grounder straight to third base yielded a home run.

The two teams faced off in a routine encounter which saw New Mexico State run out 6-2 winners. However, the story of the game panned out much earlier. In the third inning, to be more specific when a couple of lapses from Oakland led to a fortuitous homerun from a typically routine hit to third base.

A grounder to third base is a homer?
The hitters from New Mexico State showed tremendous alertness and agility to round home plate from a hit that did not deserve it. With the slugger hitting a grounder to third, the reaction seemed almost immediate. An immediate throw to first was fumbled and led to the batter getting to third before Oakland left home plate unattended for the hitter to round the bases without any significant trouble.

After scoring an easier 4th home run, New Mexico State University ran out with momentum of the game. The New Mexico State Aggies registered a pretty easy win to win the game too.

However, with college baseball returning us to live baseball, viewers were finally treated to what it would look like if baseball was to return. Major League Baseball has indicated that the lockout would need to be concluded by February 28th if the regular season is to go ahead as planned. With the deadline looming, that scenario seems increasingly unlikely.

The shortened off-season could also mean frantic trades across various franchises. With the free agent class of 2022 including names as Freddie Freeman and Carlos Correa too; there are some big signings still waiting to happen. Teams are still looking to fill out their roster, and with a shortened off-season pace will be the name of the game.
However, with college season on, it seems viewers have at least some respite. And some entertaining respite at that. But what do you think? Could college baseball ever match up to the Major Leagues?
