The New York Yankees are building towards a season in 2022. Their wild card loss will be stinging them for the off-season, but they will be looking to purge  that record as soon as possible. However, even despite their intentions to win now, the Yankees have some phenomenal depth. And the 2019 draft class may yet turn out to be a talent churner.

The Yankees may have temporary gaps in their roster but the organization has lined up some great prospects. At shortstop, even though not many players on the senior squad are active at the moment, their minor leaguers are waiting to debut. With Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Perez both knocking at the door, it can’t be long before one of them makes it to the senior squad.

Anthony Volpe speaks about depth in the organization

Anthony Volpe was the breakout prospect for the Yankees in 2021. The unassuming shortstop even managed to draw comparisons to New York Yankee great, Derek Jeter in his first season in the minor leagues. However much like the Yankee legend, Volpe too prefers to be humble and speak about his teammates more than himself.

In a recent appearance on a podcast, the shortstop spoke about two pitchers in the New York Yankees prospects. Volpe raved about the mound appearances from right-hander Hayden Wesneski, and lefty Ken Waldichuk. Said Volpe,“In the organization, we have some amazing pitchers.”

Calling out the two pitchers by name, Volpe was quick to insist that the depth in the roster is present nevertheless. “That’s just two guys. But there’s a bunch,” said Volpe.

The Yankees aren’t too well known for promoting from within the system but Volpe might be one to break that slump. Yankees manager, Brian Cashman spoke during a media engagement in December, saying, “He certainly caught the attention of the entire industry.”

Said Cashman, It really reinforces and justifies everything we heard from our amateur department when we drafted him, and so we’re excited about his future.”

Yankees Fans can certainly wait to spend big on the market for Carlos Correa but even if they don’t there’s certainly the chance that Volpe can truly make it big.
