Jacob deGrom’s potential injury could mean a major loss for the New York Mets. With the star pitcher having an opt-out clause in his contract after the 2023 season, he has made clear his intention to leave the organization.
Fans, however, may have hoped that he stayed on after the continued investment from new owner Steve Cohen. However, it appears now that deGrom is set to opt-out of his current contract either way.

With the star pitcher signing a 5-year $137 million extension in 2019, he still has a few years on his contract, but he also has an opt-out at the end of the 2022 season. However, he has insisted that this is simply a means to an end. The opt-out is only a method for him to renegotiate his deal to get some more value from it. His intentions don’t seem to be to leave the franchise at the season’s end.

Jacob deGrom set to opt-out

Jacob deGrom has been the #1 pitcher for the Mets for a while now. Despite the arrival of multiple times Cy Young winner Max Scherzer; it’s clear that deGrom is the first choice to take the mound at Citi Field. However, his injury record is what puts a significant question mark over his future.
With the star only having notched up 15 starts in 2021, his body seems to have an awful lot of knocks for a pitcher his quality. Even as the 2022 season is set to begin, deGrom is out of contention for a spot on the starting rotation.
Having sustained an injury that will take a minimum of 4 weeks to assess and recoup from before Opening Day, this only means more missed time for deGrom. However, he insisted that he would opt out of his current contract irrespective of his record with injuries.
Jacob deGrom says he is still definitely going to opt out of his contract at season's end, despite this most recent injury and the time he'll miss because of it.

Where is he headed
Explaining his reasons, however, Mets fans may rest a bit easier. deGrom will likely push to sign an extension with the Mets and is just possibly opting out of his current deal to make sure he is compensated better, and the New York Mets may yet comply.
Jacob deGrom says "the plan" will be to opt out of his contract after the season, but he wants to be in constant contact with the Mets about returning:
