Many New York Yankees fans would describe their 2022 off-season as being underwhelming. Despite pushing through a trade for star hitter Josh Donaldson at third base; and even managing cover at shortstop by acquiring shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the Yankees lost out on top free agents in the season. Particularly up for discussion were free agents Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman. They were reportedly in talks with the New York Yankees. But Brian Cashman recently cleared the air in a podcast appearance.

Speaking on the radio as a part of the Yankees set-up, Cashman appeared to clarify their approach in the off-season. And while Yankees fans may still be disappointed about missing out on certain free agents, their roster seems to be shaping up well. Especially after a five-player trade with the Twins, the Yankees seem to have acquired some bona fide talents. The players they have certainly seemed like a plus at that moment; but could the free agents have strengthened the Yankees’ roster?

The New York Yankees were close to acquiring both Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman

Asked specifically about Freddie Freeman and his signing, Brian Cashman seemed to add some perspective to Carlos Correa’s conversation. Said Cashman, “So we were aware of what their interests were financially and what their goals were to accomplish.”

However, knowing what they want and being willing to convey that to the players are two very different aspects, and it seems that the Yankees never truly crossed the Rubicon. “We never made an offer, officially. Whether it was Correa or Freeman,” added Cashman.

If it’s any consolation, the Yankees were not far from making the offer either. “But we certainly were aware and in touch with the representation about what they were looking for,” added Cashman, “you know their interest levels were being communicated to us and the level of interest in terms of term and dollars, we certainly were aware every step of the way.”

If there is any positive to this situation, Yankees fans can take some solace in the fact that at least their front office has their ear to the ground; and if any free agent is to turn up on the market, they could be slated to make a swoop.
