The New York Yankees are an institution; One that commands success. But if you’re a recent fan, you would be forgiven for not having that image. Apart from a World Series ring in 2009, the Yankees have done little of note. Last season ended on a particularly sour note for the Bronx Bombers with their exit at the hands of the Boston Red Sox in a Wild Card game exit from the playoffs.
However, the Yankees are seemingly coming back together. With a considerable portion of their roster returning from injury, they will aim to make the most of their 2022 season. And Luke Voit will look to be a big part of it.

The first baseman has, while rewarding the Yankees with his skills, lacked one specific ability over his career in the Bronx. Availability. And it is perhaps this that has led Voit to work on his fitness hard this off-season. His greatest record was in a pandemic shortened 2020 season, where arguably fitness and luck both were both on Voit’s side for the entire duration. However, it seems as though he has wised up to the situation and undertaken serious work to work on his fitness in 2022.
Luke Voit – Working on his fitness?
Apart from video snippets making their way around social media with the first baseman showing his strength and skills, Voit has also systematically undertaken an improvement in his development.

Voit has been working with the trainer, Llewellyn “Yo” Murphy, for some time now. Voit has easily been one of the finest hitters from home plate when fit. It’s just that he hasn’t been healthy for long stretches.
Voit, soon to be 31 years old, has been putting in extra work all winter. This may be down to the fact that he is at an uncertain point in his career. The New York Yankees field only Voit as the true first baseman. The rumors have been rife about a trade in the offing. While Rizzo is out of contract, the Yankees reportedly have been considering a trade for the Oakland A’s Matt Olson to occupy first base come 2022.

And while Voit sorts out his fitness troubles with his left knee strengthening, gaining lean muscle has been a focus. Said Murphy, “We’ve been really focusing on sprint mechanics.” Adding that this was a key metric Voit was looking to improve, Murphy added, “We’re running every day.”

Adding more to the specific regimen, Murphy said, “Obviously, Luke loves his weights. He loves to lift.” Speaking about the difference from the lean muscle gain being seen on Voit, Murphy added, “I wouldn’t say it’s a noticeable difference, but we’ve just been talking about really his body composition and lean mass and focusing on, ‘Let’s just carry everything you need.’” Adding that the difference may not be noticeable to the naked eye, but the effects will be seen on the field.
We certainly hope Voit is able to make health his friend, and that the Yankees first base is more certain a name on the roster.
