The New York Yankees are in an off-season of some significant roster changes. The Bronx Bombers have made clear that they will be on the lookout for a shortstop. And while the lockout lumbers on, their pursuit of Carlos Correa seems to be stalled. Hence, the Yankees in the meantime have turned their attention to somewhere else.

The New York Yankees are clearly looking for a starting shortstop this season and have a few options that they can decide to undertake. While Carlos Correa seems to be the most likely signing, Trevor Story is on the market too. Although, with Aaron Judge running the end of his contract too, a superstar signing may not be on the cards for the finances to work out.

Newest prospect for the New York Yankees

Twitter was abuzz with the apparent news of Yankees on course to sign a new switch-hitting shortstop at the beginning of the international signing window. While the lockout restricts the teams from speaking to any players currently contracted by MLB franchises, the international signing window is set to resume on 15th January.

And the Yankees look keen to secure their future in the shortstop position. With prospects like Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Perez already making strong performances in the minor leagues, the Yankees’ future shortstops seem to be lining up. However, the present still remains uncertain.

Shortstop for 2022 – Uncertainty looms

The New York Yankees realistically have a few options of what they can choose to do from. Going for a superstar shortstop, the likes of Carlos Correa or Trevor Story, and securing the present might seem feasible. However, not to forget, established league players will likely be looking for long-term deals and significant financial commitments.

This could in turn affect the Yankees’ ability to re-sign some of their current roster members whose contracts are drawing to a close. Valuable players that have endeared themselves to the Yankees fanbase, like right fielder, Aaron Judge.

The alternate is to make stop-gap signings like Matt Chapman or Matt Olson from the Athletics and wait on their prospects until they’re ready for the big leagues. Granted, the present may be compromised from players not playing their natural position, but this may allow the Yankees to re-sign Judge to a long-term deal.

And amidst all this, Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Perez have been turning it up in the minor leagues and could well be in the mix for a call-up, come 2023 or 2024. So the upside to a superstar signing may not be all that great.

Regardless, the Yankees’ interest in signing Roderick Arias is a show of intent, something fans have been desperate to see.
