Alex Rodriguez has come far from his playing days in the Bronx. In his newest venture, he is now a businessman with a diversified portfolio; his newest avatar sees him reinvent himself since his retirement in 2016. And a large part of his business persona draws from his erstwhile real estate business under the A-Rod Corporation.

He has since diversified into several verticals, including private equity and venture capital, to grow into his business avatar. However, in the latest turn of events, he might be providing former President Donald Trump with an exit opportunity from his hotel in Washington. And at a profit for the former owner, no less.

The Trump International Hotel in Washington DC has presented a unique opportunity in the capital. Over the years, because of its location and proximity to the nation’s capital, the property has become quite famous. And with the supposed sale of the property, Trump might be poised to recoup his investment and then some.

Rumor has it, an offer has been made to take over the hotel and could make A-Rod the lead investor in a group taking over the hotels, and Trump might be close to accepting it.

A-Rod offers to buy out Trump’s Washington Hotel

Reportedly, the former Yankees star may be taking on the role of “lead investor” in a group buying the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. It is said that the property is being purchased for $375 million by a fund launched by the CGI Merchant Group.

A fund that A-Rod joined in December 2020. Reportedly, the purchase is not all that the group intends on; a part of the deal would also include wiping the Trump name from the property and instituting new management from the Hilton’s Waldorf-Astoria group. The deal is also expected to be on a short timeline and could potentially close within weeks from now.

Donald Trump and Alex Rodriguez – Fr-enemies?

This would put erstwhile critics, Trump and A-Rod, in an awkward workaround. Former President Trump has expressed some adverse opinions regarding A-Rod in the past. Despite being a longtime Yankees fan, Trump has expressed previously that he was never a fan of Rodriguez’s.

Citing an unspecified bad experience that he had with the athlete, Trump had said in 2012 that he was “never a fan of Rodriguez’s, either as a player or as a person.”

Their reported deal, however, could potentially make the superstar shortstop an unlikely savior for Trump. The $375 million valuation is reportedly much higher than experts expected and could allow Trump to walk away with a profit after losing tens of millions of dollars. The hotel represents a unique opportunity as it serves as a centerpiece in attracting lobbyists, diplomats and GOP supporters in the capital. A-Rod could yet emerge as “an unlikely financial savior for Trump.”

The two, however, seem to have made up since their disagreements. Trump even praised Rodriguez when the two appeared together at a charity reception at his Bronx golf course in 2015.

If the sale does go through, we would be seeing A-Rod only supplement his reputation as a financial investor. Notably, apart from his several investments in private equity and venture capital, A-Rod is also a part-owner of the NBA and WNBA franchise based in Minnesota.

It would be interesting to see A-Rod as the owner of a hotel in the political hotbed of Washington D.C; but what do you think comes next for the former Yankee? What could his next venture be?
