Derek Jeter is no longer in Florida. Let alone for the weather, Jeter recently stepped down as CEO of the Miami Marlins too after having held the post for 5 years. However, with the story continuing to develop, additional aspects are coming to light.

While initially, Jeter had mentioned a divergent approach in strategy; the Marlins’ President David Samson later came forward to address how the decision was closer related to finances. Turn out both of them were right in part.

Derek Jeter took over at the Miami Marlins in 2017 after his retirement from the New York Yankees in 2014. Having spent 3 years out there, Jeter returned to baseball, albeit in a front-office role. However, his involvement in the franchise could not turn things around significantly for the team.

Sporting a losing record for the majority of the years that he was there, Jeter leaves with a 218-327 record on the Marlins. However, the reasons for his exit are a bit more curious.

Reasons for Derek Jeter’s exit

Derek Jeter issued a statement stepping down from the franchise from his role. In it, he mentioned that it was down to the “current vision of the franchise and its future is “different than the one [he] signed up to lead.” However, with the story developing, there may be another addition as to what that change was.

Reporter Joel Sherman stated that prior to going into the lockout, the Marlins had indicated to Jeter a budget. They had said at the time that the Marlins would be ready to spend $10 Million to $15 Million on their 2022 roster. However, with the ongoing nature of the lockout, that was a key change in strategy where the club decided to not go ahead with the level of investment.

Reportedly, this played a key part in Jeter’s decision to leave as CEO.

With the front office free agent now on the market for any free positions, it is likely that the Yankees will have perked their ears. With no pennant to their name since 2009; a time when Jeter won it as a player, the Yankees will be looking to go into rebuilding and who better to impart that winning mentality?
