Derek Jeter took up his position with the Miami Marlins shortly after his retirement in 2014. After his 5 championships over his career in the Bronx; Jeter swapped a starring role on the diamond for a front-office role with the Marlins in 2017.
Taking part ownership in the franchise too, Jeter was bought on as a part of the Bruce Sherman-led group that acquired the franchise. The Hall of Famer’s tenure with the Marlins, though, is at an end.
David Samson speaks out
David Samson took to Twitter to clarify the true reason for the split. Despite Jeter releasing a statement with his statement stepping down, Samson stepped in with a clarification on why it was that Jeter had seemingly exited the franchise in his role.
There were likely no real philosophical differences. There were revenue promises made that didn’t come true. Jeter thought not being me was all that was needed to succeed. He could no longer blame old regime. Been too many years. https://t.co/UvCaT0jIPO

Samson revealed that it wasn’t necessarily about ‘philosophical differences’ as Jeter had initially claimed in his statement. Rather, it seemed as though the exit was likelier down to “revenue promises that didn’t come true,” said Samson. He went on to state that he and Jeter also may have had some more personal disagreements that led to the exit.
Jeter, for his part, had maintained a stoic attitude with his exit and had let no beef rise to the occasion.
Derek Jeter’s Statements
As a part of his announcement, Jeter Said, “the vision for the future of the franchise is different than the one I signed up to lead. Now is the right time for me to step aside as a new season begins.”
Derek Jeter maintained that he was proud of his work with the franchise and what he had imparted along the way. Said Jeter, “We had a vision five years ago to turn the Marlins franchise around, and as CEO, I have been proud to put my name and reputation on the line to make our plan a reality.”
Jeter added that it was the process that he was focusing on. “Through hard work, trust and accountability, we transformed every aspect of the franchise, reshaping the workforce, and developing a long-term strategic plan for success,” Jeter added.
