The MLB offseason of 2022 is bound to be ruled by 2 free agents; Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman. And when the off-season resumes, the two will be in hot demand; in some instances, even by the same team. The New York Yankees have made a buzz about obtaining both players as free agents. However, there may yet be a twist in the tale. With MLB insider Bob Nightengale speaking on a radio show, he seems to think that one of the two is likelier than the other; and it’s not shortstop being filled.

The New York Yankees are clearly in build mode for 2022. With their stinging loss to the Boston Red Sox in their Wild Card post-season exit, they will be looking to move forward as soon as possible. And a free agency window to set up the season will certainly do wonders for them. However, where they make the signing is perhaps just as important. At shortstop, where they have a few prospects almost raring to go? Or at first base, where Freeman is definitely a top talent?

Bob Nightengale opines on potential moves

Speaking to 105.7 The Fan’s Vinny and Haynie, Nightengale seemed to open up about the possibility of the two moves, especially when weighed against each other. And while agreeing that at the moment both signings seemed to be equally talked about, he differed on which one is likelier to happen.

Speaking specifically about superstar shortstop Carlos Correa, he said, “I think Correa is going to take a while (to sign somewhere).”

Speaking as to why, Nightengale added that he found it slightly hard to see a natural fit for the player considering his playing profile. While the Cubs, the Yankees, and the Dodgers all appear to be in the race; few can count the Astros out to re-sign. However, he did believe that the Dodgers could hold an edge over other MLB sides.

Said Nightengale, “The Dodgers can be an X-factor because Trea Turner only has one more year and you can always slide him over to second base.”

And with the discussion for the shortstop wrapped up, things quickly turned to first baseman, Freddie Freeman. With the Atlanta Braves very much a prospect still, Nightengale seemed to think this was a more realistic signing for the Yankees.

But even Nightengale couldn’t keep himself from harkening back to Correa, if only for a moment. Said Nightengale, “I’m not completely ruling it out. I rule out Correa with the Yankees, but I’m not sure about Freddie.”
