The MLB lockout seems to be dragging on mow as it enters close to 100 days since it began with seemingly little progress. While MLB has seemed to make incremental progress through their negotiations, it still appears as though the two parties are far apart. But the issue of an international draft wrecked baseball Twitter, as some players were vehemently opposed to it. Max Scherzer of the player’s contingent though, stepped in to clarify.

Max Scherzer is a part of the MLB Players’ Association that is available to negotiate with MLB and the owners regarding the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Already having lost 2 weeks of potential game time to the lockout, it seems as though both sides are looking for a resolution soon. However, with the suggestion of an international draft drawing some ire, Scherzer had to react.

Max Scherzer clarifies stance on international draft

After some amount of public backlash prompted partly by players regarding the introduction of an international draft, Scherzer stepped in. Issuing a clarification on Twitter, the pitcher alleged that this was an attempt by MLB to malaise the Players’ Association and their reputation.

Scherzer opened the tweet clarifying that this was a first-hand account. “I was in FL,” he wrote, “We never offered the Int’l Draft.”

Scherzer went on to add, that it would be wrong to say this was never a part of their plans. However, as a part of their negotiations, they had nevertheless considered it as an offer. They heard back from MLB stating that it was unlikely they would receive anything in exchange for it. “At that point, we informed all players and agreed to no draft,” added Scherzer.

By no means, however, was he done saying his piece. Scherzer added that this seemed to be another attempt by MLB to draw down the Players Association. Wrote Scherzer, “This is MLB muddying the waters and deflecting blame.”

He urged that this shouldn’t pan into any loss of momentum for the players association; and hoped that this didn’t draw any anger from the fanbase. “Fans, pls hang in there with us,” said Scherzer to end his tweet.
