With the extension of the MLB Lockout, the prospects of spring training panning out as normal are virtually non-existent; and with it the seasonal jobs created by it. However, the League seems to be taking into account the affected parties; and  it has recently announced a fund to help out those affected by cancellation and delay of spring training. In a recent statement released by the League, they announced a $1 Million inflection to help out those affected by the delay.

The MLB Lockout began on December 2nd, 2021, and was reportedly a means of getting the parties to the negotiation table and creating some form of urgency. However, it appears that the ploy has not been fully fructified. With the two parties still at loggerheads on various issues, a resolution still appears to be a ways away. And in the meantime, those dependent on spring training may have stood to lose.

Fund announced Amid MLB Lockout

The League took to Twitter to announce that it was putting forth an effort to help out those affected by the cancellation or delay of spring training setting forth almost $1 million to do so. While some workers may still be in the dark as to how this will function, there were some general guidelines to be explored.

Reporter Ken Rosenthal tweeted a statement from MLB regarding the affected Spring Training workers. Reportedly, the fund will be administered by the clubs individually to those that need it; further that it will be made available to all part-time and seasonal workers. The statement mentions, “includes but is not limited to concessionaires, ground crew, security, clubhouse, and general ballpark operators.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred too added to the statement to address the seasonal workers. Said Manfred, “Regrettably, the people who make Spring Training a first-class experience for our fans have been affected through no fault of their own.”

Maintaining however that they are attempting to make the situation right as best they can while negotiations ensue. “We hope this fund will alleviate some of the financial concerns they have faced due to missed Grapefruit and Cactus League games this spring,” he added.
