MLB had a big exit on the cards. With Derek Jeter retiring from the game in 2014, fans were excited to mark his return to the sport in 2017. Albeit in a front-office role with the Miami Marlins, fans were nevertheless excited about having Jeter around the ballpark for a few more days. That sojourn seems to have come to an end.

With Jeter announcing his exit from the club as CEO and an exit from his shareholding in the franchise, league commissioner Rod Manfred too took a moment to acknowledge his exit.

Rob Manfred bids adieu to Derek Jeter

The league commissioner took a moment amid hasty negotiations to bid the iconic #2 an adieu from the Miami Marlins. Manfred seemed appreciative of all the Jeter has managed at the organization and marked the farewell with another mention of all that Jeter had done in his capacity on the Miami Marlins.

Commissioner Manfred stated in his statement that he thanked Jeter for his service to the Marlins, and communities attached to the franchise. Said Manfred, “Derek is a winner on and off the field.”

However, in a deeper look into how Jeter has been involved in the game for the past few years, Manfred also spoke about Jeter’s contribution to the game at large.

“He helped build a talented front office for the Marlins,” Manfred went on, “including moving the game forward by hiring women in top roles in Club’s baseball operations and executive leadership and a foundation for long term success at the Marlins.”

Manfred too didn’t want to see Jeter away from the game for too long, though. Said Manfred, “Derek is a pillar of our game and we look forward to his future contributions to Baseball.”

Derek Jeter certainly isn’t done with the game and will look to stay continually involved. However, how that takes shape remains to be seen. With the Yankees in build mode, several sportscasters have indicated that Jeter could be an ideal fit. However, only time will tell where Jeter ends up.
