The New York Mets are all set to see some serious pitching potential on the mound this season. With Jacob deGrom returning from his injury in 2021 and Max Scherzer as a pitcher rotation, hitting lineups are sure to fear visiting Citi Field this season.
However, just because the great have a reputation doesn’t mean they don’t prepare. And especially if you are Jacob deGrom, the work of developing pitches never stops.

With the star pitcher returning from injury in 2022, many will be expecting some solid displays. And despite his multiple Cy Young wins, deGrom continues to add to his arsenal as the seasons progress.
With the experience of Max Scherzer in the bullpen this year, deGrom could well be set to take a leap; from dominant to absolutely dominant. And Spring Training has been nothing if not an indication of that.

Jacob deGrom developing newer pitches?
With Spring Training ramping up to action in MLB, deGrom has had several strikeouts already. However, his development towards excellence continues to remain and so does his commitment. In the Mets’ latest encounter with the St. Louis Cardinals, the pitcher was seen practicing some particularly challenging curveballs from the mound. And despite delivering a killer stat-line, the focus seems to be on getting better.

In his post-match conference, deGrom opened up about how he was intending on taking on the pitch and his development process; specifically, he spoke about one aspect of the curveball that he was trying to get right in the game. Said DeGrom, “The first couple were good and then I was just trying to see if I could bounce one and I wasn’t able to.”
DeGrom is likely preparing for such a pitch as a breaking ball to ensure a strikeout but had some thoughts on how he could maybe get better too. “I think if I would’ve thrown it like the first two it would’ve been a bit better. But I just left it up a little bit,” he added.

But with an eye on the season still yet to go, deGrom re-focused quickly on the task ahead. Said deGrom, “Something I’m working on- Something I’ve been working on and who knows? Maybe something I use during the year.”

But what do you think will be deGrom’s most useful pitch going into the season? Could he be on track to win the Cy Young this year again? Or could he be in contention for the World Series still?
