If you had only seen one season of baseball in 2021, you would probably conclude Shohei Ohtani was the best player ever. Zoom out to a few decades back, it’s unlikely your opinion would change. The 2021 unanimous AL MVP had a statistically off-the-charts season in 2021. He was putting up batting numbers comparable to those of Barry Bonds; while still pitching in the top quartile of the league.

He is spending the off-season being duly recognized for his achievements. With being voted the cover athlete for Show 22, and featuring in several media features, Ohtani is ruling the roost. Nevertheless, the Anaheim front office hasn’t yet pulled the trigger on an extension.

Shohei Ohtani had a tremendous performance to back him up in 2021. With no significant injury reports in 2022 either, he will resume where he stopped. The question remains though, will he do it as an Angel?

The LA Angels, based out of Anaheim, have a solid roster assembled with Syndergaard joining the mound and a tandem of Trout and Ohtani in the outfield.

But how long can this trio stick together? Ohtani is 27 and in his prime, he would look to capitalize on this time as much as possible and unless he sees results, he may not renew his contract.

Shohei Ohtani reveals talks about the extension

In a recent media interaction with the Athletic, Ohtani revealed that the franchise had not yet opened any extension talks with him as yet. His current contract keeps him with the Angels through the end of the 2023 season, but the Angels will probably be eager to secure his services in the long term. With his two-way contribution likely to go a long way in the club’s success, they should look to him signing on further.

The Angels have rustled in the past; agreeing to a two-year, $8.5 million contract around this time last year to avoid arbitration. Speaking directly, Ohtani said, “I’m just trying to complete that last year of the two-year contract.”

Speaking about his off-season that has attracted media attention, the Japanese star stated, “I feel great physically. I think the key is to stay healthy and play as many games as I can, if I can repeat or even have better numbers than last year.”

“One thing I’m focusing on this offseason is, build a strong body and be able to play the whole year without missing any games,” Said Ohtani.

Therefore, Ohtani is setting his eyes on peaks higher than the ones he has scaled in 2021. What do you make of the young prodigy? Lets us know in the comments below.
