The Boston Red Sox finally seem to have kicked into gear. After having lost their first 2 games against the New York Yankees, the Sox finally seem to have gotten one right. And while the game fell in favor of the Boston Red Sox, the tale was not as straightforward. Also, a mic’d up Kike Hernandez was up to the task. He nearly called a defensive play as it happened on the diamond at the bottom of the 4th.

The Yankees were trailing 3-1 at the bottom of the 4th, and with the Sox preparing for the pitch, Hernandez provided some insight. With a faster runner on 3rd and the slower on 2nd, Hernandez hedged his bets with an out at home plate if Rizzo registered a hit. And do you know what? On the next pitch, Rizzo made contact.
Boston Red Sox’s star nearly calls stunning defensive play
With some hitting talent on home plate in the form of Anthony Rizzo; and with the Sox preparing for a pitch, Hernandez made a bold prediction from center field. Said Hernandez, “Fast guy at third. Slow guy at second. If he gets a base hit to me I’m gonna throw him out at home maybe.”

With Isiah Kiner-Falefa leading off with a double; and Jose Trevino also managing a single, the Yankees were well placed. Having runners occupying 1st and 3rd base, Plawecki miscued a bounced pitch from the dirt. That was all the runners needed to advance a base.
With runners now on 2nd and 3rd, Anthony Rizzo made his way to home plate and did what he does best. Made some solid contact with the pitch as he sent it just past the infield allowing both runners to round the bases and tie it up.
And while Hernandez followed through on his plan to a tee, the Yankees were still able to get both runners to home plate to register a tie game with another out yet to go.

Just before the pitch, Hernandez had indicated that he would rather go to home plate than try to get the runner out at 3rd. Despite trying his best, Hernandez’s throw fell a bit wayward of its intended destination and allowed the Yankees to tee up.
