The Chicago White Sox had a highly rated farm system. That is, of course, until it was depleted by the promotion of various prospects in Luis Robert or Michael Kopech. But the worst-ranked farm system, according to the MLB pipeline, may just be receiving a shot in the arm. With the signing of Oscar Colas, the White Sox may jump right back into contention.

The White Sox farm system has reportedly been off the pace in the past few years, falling as low as 30th after the 2021 Draft. However, the 2022 international free agency window could be the impetus signing they need. With the franchise in talks to land a truly 2-way prospect in Oscar Colas, the franchise could stand to reap rewards in the near future.
Who is Oscar Colas?
Colas is a Cuban national having played in Cuba’s Serie Nacional until 2019. He is possibly one of the most awaited prospects to feature in professional baseball going off simply by his moniker. Being called the “Cuban Ohtani” comes with some expectations. But with what we have seen so far, Colas might well be exactly that.
At 6″1′ and 205-pounds, Colas can hit with power and pitch with mid-90 mph velocity. He seems to be focused, however, on his duties as a fielder. Featuring as a right fielder, it seems as though that is how Colas wants to project himself.
Colas is expected to feature with a White Sox minor league affiliate in the United States or in the Dominican Summer League in the 2022 season. And it is quite likely that he will not make his debut in the majors until at least a full season spent in development.

Why the Chicago White Sox?
Colas has a solid stat line, backing him up in his playing career so far. Featuring in the Cuban Serie Nacional, he posted .289/.389/.533 in 54 at-bats for Santiago in 2019. He also has played in Japan’s minor leagues, posting a .302/.350/.516 hitting line with 11 home runs in 66 games. His pitching stats while not on full display too, have been rated by some scouts.

The southpaw hitter may also help along the White Sox in their hitting department. Adding some much-needed variety in their hitting order, Colas will do well to slot in. The White Sox currently feature a right-handed heavy batting lineup with both Yoelqui Cespedes and Micker Adolfo taking home plate in the right stance.

Colas will have plenty of Cuban company in the dugout this season. The White Sox feature a litany of Cuban talent including Jose Abreu, Yoan Moncada, Luis Robert, Cuban-born Yasmani Grandal, Cespedes, and Norge Vera, another prospect.
