There is very little debate left on whether or not Bruce Lee was one of the greatest mix-martial artists. Such was the hold of martial arts in Lee’s life, that he very seldom made movies without it. However, Lee’s respect for the art form also made him call others out, who weren’t good at it. Especially those in Hollywood. Even amidst his days of struggle to find work in America, Lee simply couldn’t tolerate the lack of knowledge in martial arts among the Hollywood elite.
In a rare phone call from 2019, Bruce Lee while talking to his friend and martial arts student Dan Lee, spoke about the actors he met in Hollywood. In what became fodder for all news websites, Lee’s shocking statements about the Hollywood elites in the late 1960s spread like wildfire.

“You saw the tai chi, the self-defense? well, I hate to tell you this. If you were there, Jesus, we were so embarrassed”, said Lee to his friend, as reported by South China Post. He didn’t seem to hold back. Lee continued, “Joe Frazier is a man who is capable of using his tools and who is very determined in his savage, relentless attacks. Whereas those sons of b*****s are cowards, turning their heads and swinging their punches. After the second round, they?re out of breath. I mean, they?re really pathetic looking, very amateur”.
Lee says these words verbatim. It threw a whole new light on his already mystical personality among the people. While Lee was always known for his hard-boiled character, one who never really stopped practicing martial arts even when he was doing his regular activities, this recording just further emboldened the idea that Bruce Lee was a tough nut to crack.
Lee further said, “A boxer, when they concentrate on their two hands, they forget how amateurish they are, they do their thing, whereas those guys go out there, they haven?t decided what the hell they?re gonna use”. His feelings about Hollywood were a contributing factor in his return to Hong Kong. However, it wasn’t the only reason why.

Bruce Lee’s return to Hong Kong amidst frustrations with Hollywood
The cancellation of his superhero series, ‘The Green Hornet’ put a dent in Lee’s flow of income. He then started giving private Jeet Kun Do lessons to Hollywood stars including Steve McQueen. However, the straw that broke the camel’s back was when he destroyed an entire office on the sets of ‘Marlowe’ in 1969. Lee was merely displaying his kickboxing and karate moves.
Lee returned to Hong Kong in 1971 after his difficulty finding work in Hollywood. Lee also said in the call, “I mean before they contact each other, they do all the fancy stance and all the fancy movement. The minute they contact, they just don?t know what the hell to do. They slip and they fell on their a***s”. Bruce Lee was as direct as anybody could be.
