

Legendary martial artist and actor Bruce Lee was at the peak of his career when he slipped into quietus. He was dubbing for Enter the Dragon when Lee was diagnosed with cerebral edema that led to his death. The day was the 20th of July 1973 when the Little Phoenix took his last breath in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. Thousands of people jostled in front of the funeral parlor that made the South China Morning Post call it “a carnival.” But while the world was mourning, his wife Linda Cadwell’s decision concerning Lee’s funeral arrangements caused a rude awakening of his countrymen.
On the 24th of July, Lee’s funeral which took place in Hong Kong attracted mourners in huge numbers who refused to let go of the hearse and continued walking with their hero. After all, it was the last time they would be near him. What part did Cadwell have to play in this?

More than anything else, Bruce Lee was a husband first
Cadwell wanted to bury the megastar in America, which angered a lot of people. It must have been a very difficult choice for a young 28-year-old widow to make. The media reported the matter in a denigrating context as Linda decided to bury him in Seattle, making it impossible for the average Chinese fan to visit his grave. Some even blamed her for holding a grudge against the country.

Cadwell, on the other hand, explained, ?I decided to bury Bruce in the peace and calm of Seattle”, according to his biography Bruce Lee: A Life written by Matthew Polly. To support her remark, she also stated, ?I think his happiest times were spent in Seattle, and I intended to return there with my children to live.? The place held a special spot in their hearts as it was in Seattle that the couple met, and fell in love.

A myth that surrounds the death of the Little Phoenix
Lee passed away due to cerebral edema in May 1973. Though his autopsy reports stated kidney damage as the reason behind his sudden demise, the sudden nature of this death gave rise to some conspiracy theories, that gained traction following his death.

A ridiculous theory suggests that Chinese Kung fu masters killed Lee for teaching martial arts to foreign students. Evidently, they didn’t like the fact that American students will be as knowledgeable as they are of their pure and secure tradition. So, they conspired to give him a “touch of death“. This was indeed the talk of the town until Lee’s mate Chuck Norris stepped in slam those theories.
