Three massively successful kung-fu films were released between the years 1978 and 1979 – Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow, Drunken Master, and The Fearless Hyena. It had only been five years since Bruce Lee passed away, and a new star had taken his place in Hong Kong. Jackie Chan, then a 24-year-old martial artist-turned-actor, with the films, had hit a new high in his career. And subsequently, money kept flowing in. Such was his earnings, that Chan didn’t mind spending $16 million on lunches with friends. Here are more ways he lived lavishly during his early days of fame.
In his biography, ‘Never Grow Up’ with Zhu Mo, Chan talks about the time he acquired ‘The Golden Harvest Offices’ of Bruce Lee in Chapter 12. Struck by fame at an early age, Chan soon became a spendthrift. If spending that amount of money for dinner with friends seems huge, Chan did a lot more than that.

Jackie Chan wrote in the book ‘Never Grow Up’, “After you live in poverty, cash gives you a sense of security. I spent a fortune on meals and drinks for my friends? Around ten years ago, I spent $16 million in one year paying for other people?s meals”. He recalls how friends would come to visit him from all around the world, and Chan would ensure they left with a night to remember. Karaoke bars and nightclubs were just an add-on to great food and drinks.
Jackie Chan’s fame was at an unimaginable level and as a young man in his 20s, he made sure to display it. He would often go to clothing stores and try on every shirt, pant, and shoe until one fit or he liked. Since those shirts had a no-return policy, he basically brought all of them. He also brought his entire stunt team watches from Albert Yeung’s Watch Emporium. The expenditure never stopped.

However, looking back, Chan realizes that he was a bit too immature to do that. He wrote, “You can see how spiteful and immature I was. Now I know that my revenge on this hapless girl was about ignorance and ego. I?d never treat someone like that now” after he deliberately annoyed a saleswoman once by trying on everything in the store and making her rearrange them later.

Chan grew up in poverty as a kid and often dreamed about owning the things he eventually did. Fame hit him hard, but he soon acclimatized to it. In one instance in 2000, Chan failed to secure the bid for a rare Chinese artifact, a timekeeping device. The decoration was what made it special, and Chan wanted to buy the horse head for $30 million. Unbeknownst to him, the auction started at $60 million and was eventually sold at $68 million.

Although much more stable with his fame and money by then, Chan was humbled by this experience at the auction. Although Chan has only grown his stardom and wealth from his The Fearless Hyena days, it is still a far cry from when he used to spend without a second thought.
