Tola and his fellow runners set a blistering pace, with a lead pack of eight passing the 10km mark in 28:57. By the halfway point, the group had reduced to six runners, reaching 1:01:33. Bekele’s fall at the start prevented him from keeping up with the leaders, and he dropped out after his calf muscle tightened. Tola maintained his lead and eventually secured victory shortly before the 30km mark, although he fell just one second short of the world record pace at 1:27:39. With a comfortable lead by 35km, Tola could ease off the pace.
