Now, she talks about how a bitter message from a fellow athlete made her put up her guard and take control of things.
Kim was grateful for the hate message
Chloe Kim was just 17 years old when she won her first Olympic medal. She became the youngest snowboarder to grab the medal. One would think her life was super happy after that, but that was sadly not the case.
After her Olympic win, Kim realized it was not so easy to get back to her normal life. Reporters and fans always followed her and hardly could spend any time in peace. She was under constant pressure.
It didn’t help that around this time, a fellow snowboarder sent Kim a message meant for someone else, calling her a “cocky a** b***h”. This hit Kim hard. She had never faced such direct hate before. It took a terrible toll on her.
However, it made Kim put up her guard. She realized that she needed to be strong.
“It’s definitely one of those things that I wish I didn’t see, but I’m also grateful. If I didn’t see it, I would have been, like, ‘Oh, cool, we’re still all good.’ It’s helpful for me to know. It definitely made me put my guard up a little more,” said the 21-year-old.
At the end of the day, Chloe Kim was grateful. She received the message and it was like a wake-up call for her. She realized that she didn’t have to keep tolerating all the hate and she could stand up against it. The message, in turn, made her stronger.
