“Kite Surfing on Lake Auckland domain”, read the Facebook post alongside the picture of the surfer, shared by ‘Classic Kiwi‘. Auckland has been receiving some heavy rainfall for the past few days, which has caused devastation in many parts of the city. Roads have been flooded, sewers contaminated, and citizens are advised to take precautions amidst a few deaths and serious injuries. In lieu of such a tense situation, netizens did not treat a surfer near water, very kindly. Here’s how some of them reacted.

“Play stupid games win stupid prizes. Then people are asking why there’s any casualties during flooding. Cos if he goes underwater there’s maybe some unknown rubbish he’s unaware of”

“Why not make yourself useful and help people instead of romping in shit-contaminated water?”

“You want dysentery? Because this is how you get dysentery”

Some, had not-so-harsh reactions to the post.

“Extreme weather, extreme sports. Go for it”

“It’s a big green field no more hazardous than the sea, sieze the day !”

“New attraction in Auckland buggers fixing it just go with it”

“It was a great sight and very entertaining. Brought a smile to us all watching, some joy over these crazy days”

Their comments ranged from ridicule to outright mockery, some even thwarted their anger. This isn’t the first time a surfer has come under the radar for their lackadaisical attitude, as Kelly Slater once received a lot of flak for his hidden role in increasing environmental concerns. However, some didn’t think there was a correlation between an extreme sport, and the present horrific conditions in the city.
