Maintaining a proper diet has been one of the most effective ways known to stay healthy, especially with increasing age. Many often reduce the vast quantities of meat in their diet, that they once used to have. Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger somewhat took the same route. Schwarzenegger, who relied on his meat-heavy diet during his bodybuilding days, has cut down on meat consumption by a hefty amount of late. This found a significant mention in the latest edition of his newsletter.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back with his newsletter, and this time, in one of the sections, he answered a fan question regarding his current diet. The man who used to eat chicken and fish a lot during his prime Olympia days has reduced his non-veg consumption by nearly 80% today. Apparently, he relies more on vegetarian food.

Arnold Schwarzenegger enjoys more green food now

Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote in his newsletter Arnold’s Pump Club, “I’m not fully vegan. I just eat about 80 percent less meat than I used to. For protein, my staples are eggs, salmon, and chicken”. It does indicate that the Austrian Oak relies on some meat to fulfill his protein requirement. However, it has been more about vegetarian food for him.

He continues, “But I have more and more veggie burgers with lentils and beans. My soups, if you saw the recipe, have chickpeas. I also use my Ladder plant protein powder that’s powered by pea protein”. Schwarzenegger, now 75 years old, seems to be enjoying more green foods, without compromising his intake and maintaining good health.

But Schwarzenegger also mentions that it’s more about the “Routine” to him. There are times when he has an off-day heavy meal or a cheat meal just to satisfy his palate. But the seven-time Mr. Olympia winner, a stickler for discipline, always manages to burn the calories and not suffer a health setback.

The intense change in his diet over time

“The key to my diet is being pretty boring… is being very routine so that when I eat a big meal, it doesn’t set me back”, says Schwarzenegger in his newsletter. He mainly attributes this fact to his regular routine of eating healthy food. One off-day or one cheat meal doesn’t necessarily affect much then.

Schwarzenegger’s diet once included three scrambled eggs for breakfast and one cooked chicken breast for lunch among other foods. As per Thrillist, he would sometimes even eat an entire chicken and drink a pitcher of beer after a workout. The bodybuilder who once swore by a regular intake of 2750 calories to achieve great bodybuilding status, has now trimmed down to something far more leguminous. It is no wonder he has his energy reserve full even at 75!
