With every win that Alex Ovechkin registers, he is inching close to the record of Wayne ‘The Great One’ Gretzky. Ovechkin’s signature one-time slapshot has made him one of the most dangerous players on the rim. As he plays his 18th season, Washington Capital’s captain has now caught the attention of Gretzky himself.

As the gap to register the maximum win is getting close, Gretzky shares his thought on the NHL star’s performance. He shares his honest opinion and remarks whether he has a chance to break his record.

Ever since Gretzky retired from sports professionally, he has rather been absent in the live games. However, on the son’s persuasion, he does keep an eye on Ovechkin’s performance. For those unversed, Gretzky holds the maximum number of 894 goals in NHL history. As the decades have passed, he now remains hopeful that he finally has someone to contend for breaking his record.

The Great One congratulated him for his win, Saying, “I‘m so happy that he won a Stanley Cup.” As the fans and sports enthusiasts speculate about Ovenchkin’s prospect of beating Gretzky’s record, the retired legend had his thoughts to share. Speaking about it to NBC sports, he said, “The most important thing in this game is to win a championship, right? It doesn’t mean anything unless you win a championship.”

Gretzky also praised the 37-year-old ice hockey player and lauded him for his good conduct. Impressed by his performance, Gretzky talked about how happy he would be if Ovechkin breaks his record. He finds him to be the deserving candidate and reflects that even if he loses the record to him, he will be a happy man. And according to him, “that’s all that matters.”

Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin, aka Alex Ovechkin, aka The Great Eight, is widely hailed as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time. Securing his 32nd goal of the 2022–2023 season, the caption helped his team to beat the Penguins  3–2 in SO. The goal marked the 812th of Ovechkin’s career and the 401st goal he has scored at home.

With this feat, he is now tied with former Capital player Mike Gartner for the fourth-most NHL goals at home. Extending his NHL career feat, he also secured his 10th power-play goal. Thus, needless to say, for him, the goal was significant in more than one way.
