With rider Mike Smith, the chestnut colt dominated the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, finishing first and defeating Good Magic in the final stretch. In addition to the win, the colt broke the “Curse of Apollo.” This achievement made him the first horse in 136 years to win the Kentucky Derby without competing as a two-year-old, a feat last achieved by Apollo in 1882. It was a watershed event in American horse racing history, cementing Justify’s place in Thoroughbred racing lore for all time.
