A famous name in the horse racing world is Kent Desormeaux. The 53-year-old racing legend has been a part of the circuit since 1986. Despite being around retirement age, Desormeaux still holds the racing spirit to win races and bring joy to his supporters. In addition to missing time with family, the rider became unwell earlier this month and had to take a break from racing.

The way 2024 started for the 53-year-old jockey isn’t what he aimed for. In the interview with DRF, Kent Desormeaux claimed that it wasn’t “Covid,” which was the reason for his illness. He further added, saying, “I’ve been under the weather. I was bed ridden for eight days. I’m never sick. This one got me.” However, despite all the health issues, Desormeaux is hopeful that on Saturday he will return to horse racing. As he was also part of a training session last weekend at Santa Anita, the jockey plans to start off the racing action of 2024 at the same venue.

With his last victory coming in October 2023, the comeback would undoubtedly be a major boost for the jockey. Despite returning to the track during the Santa Anita spring-winter meeting, the rider’s stint was not successful due to a zero-win. Now that he’s over the sickness that affected him during the early days of 2024, Desormeaux hopes for a glorious comeback, which will also add a few more millions to his already illustrious career.

Community got mixed thoughts on the jockey’s return

The horse racing community is still deeply split over the Hall of Famer jockey. Opinions on Kent Desormeaux’s return to the track were swiftly expressed in the comment section of the Facebook post by DRF. As the jockey was absent on the track in the late 2023 season, this fan said, “He just needs to retire.” Another fan doesn’t doubt the jockey’s achievement but the consistency; as they say, “Kent is a great racer rider but not very trust worthy. Too much drama.”

One fan could relate to Desormeaux, as they revealed, saying, “He must have had what I had around Breeder’s Cup. I never get sick either; but I was so tired that I had a hard time staying awake. It was almost like mono. All I wanted to do was sleep! Glad he’s back!” Still hyped up for the jockey’s return, this fan comments, saying, “Great news!! You still got it, Kent.” Returning to the track will not be a picnic for the 53-year-old. But he would be someone to watch out for at Santa Anita, given his extensive expertise with horses.
