The Hong Kong Races week, over the past few days, was nothing short of a celebration for horse racing enthusiasts and entities. From multiple championships to entertainment evenings, the Hong Kong Jockey Club had it all on the schedule. The occasion called upon thousands to race, witness, and explore. For Karis Teetan, one of the greats of Hong Kong racing scenes, the event entailed all three practices.
Karis Teetan entered the Hong Kong Races to compete in more than one event. The Jockey championships, Gala Dinner, and Race Day were all attended by the famed Jockey. However, prior to it all, despite being in the region for years, Teetan went on to explore restaurants. But interestingly, the stepping out was directed to meet a horse racing veteran.

The World Horse Racing on the 15th posted a beyond-the-race tracks clip of the jockey ahead of the races. “@KarisTeetan goes eatin’ in Hong Kong… At a former trainer’s restaurant?” the post on X captioned. Almond Lee, a trainer, who left the industry back in 2018 to find his calling as a restaurateur welcomed Teetan with open arms. Though he playfully mentioned “a Jockey don’t eat much,” he ensured to feed Karis his signature Shanghai foods.

From the coveted list, the jockey was presented with a ‘Chinese Hamburger‘. Teetan’s remark on the dish being “messy” was soon forgotten as he enjoyed the served bites. “Wow. A nice strong taste. Crunchy outside,” Teetan exclaimed as the delight ticked all the right boxes. Additionally, the meeting took a heartwarming turn as Lee called Teetan his favorite jockey sharing the former’s final moments on the ground.

The horse racing duo’s warming past
Back in 2018, during the stages of Lee’s retirement announcement, the trainer had a slim chance to retain his position. Intriguingly, the responsibility partly fell on the famed jockey, Karis Teetan. Having had 49 wins that year, the jockey needed two more to deliver the retaining chances to Almond Lee in Happy Valley. “Almond is one of the nice guys of Hong Kong racing so I would love to give him one of the wins he needs,” Teetan said.

Almond Lee managed to win one of the rides through Teetan, however, his last hopes on Enjoy Life did not deliver the same results. Despite trying his best, Teetan landed third atop Enjoy Life, failing to help Lee reach the 16-win benchmark. Nonetheless, one of Hong Kong racing’s renowned found the right help in Teetan until the end and ultimately a suited calling.
