As the new year of 2024 rang in, horse racing teams started embracing the year with back-to-back January races. Besides the US making winning strides, Great Britain is nowhere behind. One of the Premier National Hunt hurdle races, the County Handicap hurdle, is taking stops already. In the current stop at Wincanton, as an equine stood with the gold around his neck, it was time for the trainer to place his views.

Starting his career as a point-to-point jockey, Joe Tickle had furthered on to become a star equine trainer. Currently standing with £11,546 in his 2023-2024 purse, Tickle engaged in a candid conversation after securing his first Wincanton win. All thanks to his equine, who brought him a good name, thus reminding him of his last Wincanton visit.

He continued, “Two miles down there seems to suit him down to the ground. Yeah, the track really suits him…really fun”. Devon, being just a few miles from Wincanton, Tickle “had a lot of luck” hereTo shed light on some of the plus points of the Wincanton track, Tickle opened up.

Tickle’s take on the recent win and the local tracks

“Nice local track. That’s right. Yeah. Exeter, Thorns and Wincanton, they’re all local tracks, which are easier for the owners, isn’t it. It’s sometimes more competitive, but when it works out, it’s a great occasion isn’t it?” Joe Tickle said. Having a liking for tracks within proximity, he also showed me how the year is for me.

He said, “…so we usually have eight jumpers through the winter and eight flat horses in the summer, and then my partner Danny, she’s got a good few pointer pointers. Yeah, so it keeps us busy, anyway.” At Wolverhampton, there’s a Sunday card which won’t be covered by ITV, unfortunately. Now, the fans have their hopes up for Cheltenham Festival displays.
