A panel of experts shortlisted the most skillful athletes for this honor, but the winner was decided by the public vote. Hence, Goalkeeper Mary Earps received the highest vote for the award and notched the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
The expert panel also nominated the biggest tennis player Alfie Hewett, and golfer Rory McIlroy for the BBC awards. Along with Dettori, they also had to face a major failure.
