It was probably the hardest year of Frankie Dettori’s life in 2012. Following the six-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine, the British Flat Racing Champion didn’t ride a horse for a year. Things soon turned worse when his wife, Catherine Allen, asked him, “Show me how good you are!” after their financial conditions were in the nadir. Hearing this, Dettori felt he was “shot in the heart“. Notwithstanding these hardships, the British Flat Racing champion has taken a lot in his stride and is sorted in his marital life as well.
But it was this defining and paradigm-altering moment that got the 53-year-old all riled up. Dettori would ride soon after in the Epsom Derby, and not only that, he would go on to win the race as well. Now, a decade later, alluding to that inspirational story, he divulges on Piers Morgan Uncensored what it takes to have a mirth-ridden married life, albeit with a lot of setbacks along the bumpy ride.

After proposing to her in a romantic way at a restaurant with a ring, Frankie Dettori married Catherine Allen on 20th July 1997. Two and a half decades later, the charismatic duo is still as good in love as they were then. As the 2023 Breeders’ Cup winner sits with Piers Morgan to discuss his legendary career, the 53-year-old says “We don’t live in each other’s pocket“ which is the reason behind a happy and enduringly envious married life.
Dettori reasons that his wife lets him be him, and he lets her be her. They are entwined by being ‘busy with children‘ or partaking in activities on their own, sans complaints. “We meet in the middle. We have our own things that we like, and you know, she just gives me free range to be what I have to be”, he explains. Dettori further praises her wife, saying, “It’s important to have that kind of backing“. But didn’t his wife challenge him during his hard time?
