Since his phenomenal resurgence, Castellano has become an unstoppable force in the fields. This year itself, he has received awards and nominations for his races, since has resumed his victorious season raising the stakes for other riders.
And there’s a moving force behind it. Castellano acknowledges the supreme support of his family in helping him achieve milestones. In a recent interview, he thanked his wife and family as the ultimate backbone.

The NYRA press office conducted an exclusive interview with the renowned jockey, Javier Castellano, recounting his memorable achievements this year. NYRA posed the question which recounts how Castellano’s family has consistently been on his side, despite the ups and downs. “How much does their unwavering support mean?” the question follows.
Answering the query, Castellano adds, “I’m so thankful for them. I give a lot of credit to my wife. Abby and my kids always support me. They are always with me every single step of the way.” He feels exceptionally grateful towards them for their unrelenting presence, despite the upheavals in his career.
Javier talked about the slowdown in his career, shedding light on how it can be exceptionally lonely. He understands the psyche, and where it comes from. Castellano remarked, “I get it and I understand that’s part of the game. They only reach out to people who win races. People who don’t win get put on the side.” Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of consistency, to deliver now and then. He added, “You have to work hard, be dedicated and be disciplined. My family’s support means so much to me.” Certainly, his family’s support has marked his path to resurgence.

A winning year for Jockey Javier Castellano
At the age of 46, Castellano is dedicated to pursuing the game with equal zeal and dedication. For four straight years (2013 to 2016), he won the Eclipse Awards. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017 due to his winningest display of performances. However, experiencing a slowdown soon after, things became rough. But, he had his family’s support to keep his head above water.

Now, once again winning the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby aboard Mage, he has proved himself. In 2023 itself, Castellano has aced four Grade 1 races. Castellano remarks, “To also win the United Nations [Therapist], the Beverly D [Fev Rover], and the E. P. Taylor [Fev Rover] in the same year is a big highlight in my career. I’m very thankful.”
