It included a picture conveying a significant message from Damon Thayer, where he affirmed his decision not to pursue re-election to the state Senate in 2024, noting that the culmination of his current term next year will signify 22 years of service in the Senate, including a 12-year tenure as Majority Floor Leader. After thoughtful discussions with adult children, close friends, and colleagues, the conclusion was reached that this decision aligns with his convictions.
It further included, “I have accomplished most of the political and policy goals I set out to achieve I am grateful to the residents of the 17th district who granted me the honor of representing them in the Senate, and to my colleagues in the GOP caucus for the privilege of being their Majority Leader.”

Thayer’s vision beyond senate
He added that he is excited about potential opportunities in the private sector that demand a greater commitment of his time and energy, a luxury he has been unable to fully devote to due to the substantial responsibilities that accompany being a part of the citizen legislature. Looking ahead to the final year of his term, Thayer affirmed his dedication to championing the policy objectives of the Senate GOP with the same passion and enthusiasm for which he is known. His focus remains steadfast on ensuring a successful 2024 Legislative Session.

Thayer promoted Kentucky’s horse racing, bourbon, and tourism interests by supporting historical racing, which raised racetrack revenue. He advocated for steps like abolishing age tax on aged spirit products, allocating $75 million to restoring tourism after pandemic, and supporting the conservativeness policies such as right-to-work law, tax reforms and others. He won an award for Policymaker of the Year together with Rep. Michael Meredith because both played a significant role in the passage of sports betting laws.
