The 149th Preakness Stakes at a muddy Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore ended without a Triple Crown victory in 2024 as Seize the Grey clinched the title. He surpasses Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and six other competitors. Running a swift 1:56.82, Seize the Grey maintained a commanding lead from start to finish, with Mystik Dan closely trailing as the runner-up. Catching Freedom secured the third position in this race.

Guided by jockey Jaime A. Torres and under the expert tutelage of D. Wayne Lukar, Seize the Grey surged to victory, claiming not only the top spot but also a handsome $1.2 million prize. This win marks a historic moment as 88-year-old Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas becomes the oldest trainer to secure a Triple Crown race victory. With his seventh Preakness victory, he now shares the second-highest number of wins in history, just one behind Bob Baffert.

Seize the Grey’s triumph in the Preakness came as a surprise, especially considering the stiffer competition compared to the Pat Day Mile on May 4. However, with the Lukas connection, it’s hardly unexpected to see one of his horses draped in a blanket of black-eyed Susan flowers. Yet, beyond the victory, Seize the Grey’s impressive earnings speak volumes.
