The Doomben Racecourse, in the heart of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, saw an epic horse racing spectacle on Saturday, December 30. The Nudgee Stakes, a listed race for fillies to run over a distance of 1200 meters, commenced with heart-pounding exhilaration. For a Multiple Group 1 winning trainer based in Australia and a leading Sydney jockey, this race was initially not part of their plan.

But seeing a golden opportunity present itself for another upcoming $1 million race, a daring move resulted in a triumphant $200,000 victory and an interesting chance to secure a $1 million prize.

In a post on X by TVG, the account shared a riveting 30-second clip of the final stretch of the Listed Nudgee Stakes at Doomben. Tyler Schiller, a talented Sydney jockey, skillfully rode Lady Laguna along the inside rail to victory at the Nudgee Stakes. To secure the win, Lady Laguna defeated another strong contender, Chinny Boom, from Rockhampton.

Chinny Boom secured the second spot and finished ¾ length behind Lady Laguna, while Comrade Rosa came in third and finished ½ length behind the winner, Lady Laguna. With blazing audacity, the 4yo bay Mare Lady Laguna from Australia, trained by Annabel Neasham, not only secured the massive prize money of $200,000 but also earned a prestigious opportunity to ride in the $1 million race on Magic Millions Day.

A serendipitous shift of plans

Initially, Tyler Schiller wasn’t the designated jockey for Lady Laguna. However, circumstances changed when Lady Laguna’s trainer, Annabel Neasham, found out that Lady Laguna was eligible for a wildcard entry into the prestigious Magic Millions race. This led Tyler Schiller to make a quick trip to Brisbane and ride Lady Laguna to victory at the Listed Nudgee Stakes at Doomben and secure a wildcard in the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies and Mares race on Magic Millions Day.
