Irish 1,000 Guineas, Breeders’ Cup, and thousands more to his name, yet what stands out about the 54-year-old is his generosity. Be it the actions stemming from his training methods or his engagement with the fans, O’Brien is known to win hearts.

Recently, the famed trainer made his way to the prestigious Hong Kong races. As he awaited his equines’ presence on the ground, O’Brien extended a warming gesture toward the fans. Stretching beyond the stands, the trainer’s outlook only elevated the status among the racing community.

During the 2023 season of Hong Kong International Races, O’Brien, one of the GOATs of Horse Racing, entered with the hopes of gaining his first event win. And as he stood in anticipation of the same, the trainer saw no shortage of fans swarming in the stands behind. Despite the tension, O’Brien was mindful enough to acknowledge their cries through his autographs. What a man! World Horse Racing wrote sharing a video. “Five minutes before the Hong Kong Cup and Aidan O’Brien still had time to sign autographs for his fans… the post further admired.

However, sadly for the famed trainer, the HKIR did not turn out to hold satisfactory results. With Luxembourg, Aesop’s Fables, Cairo, and Warm Heart across all 4 races, O’Brien fell short by margins to gain wins for the season. Nonetheless, as a 54-year-old, O’Brien retains one of the top spots globally, all whilst staying grounded.

O’Brien started his career in 1996, and ever since, he has only continued to excel. From Desert King to the Hong Kong Races, the trainer has relied on his sticking principles. And the principles state that there are no rigid ones. He is of the belief that, what effect a technique might have on an equine might not work the same on another and rather embraces flexibility.

Following through, O’Brien today stands as the most successful Epsom Derby trainer of all time with 9 wins. Moreover, he also holds the record as a trainer for most G1 winners in a year at 28. A win or not, the trainer has remained staunch to his status, even clinching the Flat Award at the annual Horse Racing Ireland Awards over the past week.
