Perth Racing, the administrator of the Western Australian horse racing industry has its wings spread far and wide. Ascot Racecourse and Belmont Park have been under the committee’s management; hosting the best of the thrill and entertainment in the industry. Saturday witnessed the presence of one of the cherished stakes of the region; Winterbottom Stakes.
The Winterbottom stakes first saw its course decades ago with the Principal race. However, with time, the stakes have come to grow with the status and the prize purse. Currently, the races own $1.5 million in purse over a track of 1200 meters at Ascot Racecourse. As equines gathered for the prestige of the mentioned on the 2nd, only one would return a victor and Overpass did so spectacularly.
Overpass shuns the horse racing realm

On the 2nd of December, the Ascot Racecourse hosted Day 3 of The Pinnacles with Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes Day. Crown Perth had promised vibrant scenes and a thrilling atmosphere. Overpass, trained by Bjorn Baker, at Warwick Farm had no Group 1 win to his name as he entered Ascot. However, besting the 15 on the field, the 5-year-old claimed an unexpected win. “OVERPASS (5 g Vancouver – Walkway) proves too good for them in the Winterbottom Stakes and claims his first Group 1 win,” ANZ Bloodstock News celebrated sharing the winning moment.

Overpass stood at $3 starting the race on Sunday. Fluctuating between $2.50 and $3.20, the gelding had not many hopes on him. However, paring with Parr, the gelding left behind Oscar’s Fortune and Ripcord by 1.68 lengths to earn $822,000. Alongside the victor, it was also Jockey Parr’s glorious run.

The racing duo reigns victorious
Ever since marking the beginning of his career, Overpass has raced 24 tracks to own 6 wins and 5 placings. In April, earlier this year, the equine earned the most prestigious of titles among his 6 wins: The Quokka (1200m). Following the same, the 5-year-old got himself a spot on the $20 Million, Everest Trophy 2023 squad. Though he slipped to a 10th, his road to the race presented a promising horse racing potential showcased at Winterbottom.

“He’s just kept raising the bar… I’m just thrilled for the horse and thrilled for the team,” said Parr according to Horse Betting. Further, trainer, Baker talked about Overpass stating, “This horse also deserved to win a Group 1, no doubt. I really thought this horse could win The Everest, but he just wasn’t himself on the day.”
