Today, on May 4th, 2024, the 150th running of the esteemed Kentucky Derby, also referred to as the “Run for the Roses,” took place. This renowned race marks the inaugural event of horse racing’s Triple Crown. With twenty competitors in contention, each aimed to secure the coveted top spot and earn a $3.1 million prize. However, the tables turned as the most favored horses, Fierceness and Sierra Leone, lost, and the victory was claimed by Mystik Dan. Yet, the aftermath of Sierra’s loss was marred by controversy surrounding their jockey.

Despite the odds stacked against him at 16-1, Mystik Dan emerged victorious today. Sierra Leone secured second place in the race and earned $4.64, while Forever Young came in third, earning $5.58. However, after the race, pictures surfaced on X showing Tyler Gaffalione, Sierra’s jockey, grabbing the Forever Young horse just before the finish line to earn second place. This sparked questions among fans about the event.

There have been several instances in the history of the Kentucky Derby where interference has caused disqualification. However, in all the cases, the issue was raised by the jockey. Among the many, only a few reached a steward’s inquiry. Had Sierra Leone – the most expensive horse in the race at $2.3 million – got the top spot, it would have been the first victory for its trainer Chad Brown at the Kentucky Derby.

Controversy erupts over the Sierra Leone incident at the Kentucky Derby

Several social media users demanded the disqualification of Sierra Leone and his jockey, calling Gaffalione grabbing Forever Young a foul move. Among the multiple comments, a few stood out. One fan remarked, “Anyone else see #SierraLeone jockey grabbing the other horse? #KentuckyDerby.” This comment drew attention to a potentially controversial incident, prompting further discussion and scrutiny among spectators.

Another comment added to the discussion, stating, “Talk about a great weekend for Kenny McPeek and Brian Hernandez! A great rider who delivered two picture-perfect trips on the biggest stages. Also – anyone else a bit surprised there was no inquiry/objection between Sierra Leone and Forever Young?” This comment acknowledges the success of winning the horse and raises questions about the lack of inquiry or objection regarding the incident involving Sierra Leone and Forever Young during the Kentucky Derby. It’s worth noting that Kenny McPeek is the trainer of Mystik Dan, and Brian Hernandez is his jockey.

Another comment weighed in on the controversy, stating, “The Sierra Leone horse should be disqualified for forcefully bumping into the Forever Young horse!!!! Penalize the owner!!!!” This comment reflects a strong stance on the incident, advocating for disqualification and potential penalties for Sierra Leone due to the perceived interference during the race.

Another comment emphasized the alleged misconduct, stating, “SIERRA LEONE CHEATED!!! THE JOCKEY LITERALLY PUT HANDS ON FOREVER YOUNG! DQ THEM!!!” The comment strongly asserts that Sierra Leone engaged in cheating during the race, alleging physical interference by the jockey with the horse Forever Young.
