The Yonkers Raceway has held a prominent presence in the New York horse racing community for over a century. The racecourse has undertaken various forms from flea market grounds to County fairs following its evolving stages. However, through it all, the landmark has popularly hosted numerous stakes and historic Thoroughbred flat races for the awaiting enthusiasts.
In 2006, the venue became the first harness track in America to host two Triple Crown races on the same day. Nonetheless, despite its continued triumphant run, the track faced a downfall over the weekend.
Horse racing enthusiasts witness disturbing accident

On the evening of 17th November, Friday, the Younkers Raceway stood witness to a multiple-horse accident during the eighth race for the day. According to reports, the domino effect started when one of the horses tripped and fell, leading to three drivers being thrown off their carts. ?It was an unfortunate accident. Very rare in our game in harness racing,? Joseph A. Faraldo, chairman of the U.S. Trotting Association,?told News 12. Following the incident, the US Trotting Association posted an update on the schedule and behind the scenes. “UPDATE: Yonkers accident results in no-contest; final race canceled, racing resumes Monday, November 20,” the post read.

?We can confirm an accident took place during the eighth race at Yonkers Raceway on Friday… the leading horse in the race stumbled and fell, causing a collision with the trailing horses and drivers in the race,? an MGM Yonkers Raceway said in a statement. The consequences of the incident entailed several injuries to the drivers while the horses were declared unharmed.

Yonkers Raceway provides drivers’ update
As per the early reports, Driver Jim Marohn Jr. suffered broken forearms and a broken thumb while Driver Tyler Buter fractured ribs and his collarbone. SOA of New York president on Sunday provided an update on both the drivers’ conditions. Tyler is said to be undergoing surgery on Monday following multiple fractures and Jim’s surgery still remains a possibility. Driver Bob Di Nozzi, who suffered multiple fractures of the ribs holds no update as of yet.

Buter’s wife took to Facebook following the accident and expressed gratitude that Buter was relatively unharmed, while also offering well-wishes for the recovery of the other drivers involved in the incident that evening. The Yonkers Raceway thanked the support team for the quick response and stated that horses and drivers remain their top priority. Keeping up, the venue canceled the races on Friday and shifted them to Monday, the 20th.
