The new season of horse racing events has begun its ascent with new champions framing the list. Starting with New Year’s Day stakes in New Zealand, the first week of the season has hosted excitement all across the world. While the richest of races and the most prestigious await their return, the building steps have ensured a thrilling start for the season ahead.

The horse racing calendar marked a beginning right on New Year’s Day with Cheltenham, Las Flo, Railway Stakes, and more. What followed further for the week were numerous more G1 races and events beyond the grounds.

A look back at the new season’s week

The World Horse Racing on the 8th took to Instagram to share the sport’s pinnacle moments for the week. “WEEKEND RACING ROUND-UP,” WHR wrote, sharing stills of 8 of the winning moments from different nations. First on the list was Uruguay’s biggest race, G1 G.P Jose Pedro Ramirez, held on the 6th of January every year. Argentine three-year-old Ever Daddy took the crown for the nation’s most prestigious race. The list next added South Africa as Charles Dickens won the King’s Plate, securing a Berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Long Lease came next as the 4-year-old clinched the G1 Calcutta Derby victory in a thriller run against Ramiel. On the 4th, it was Panthalassa’s retirement on Monday at Nakayama racecourse. Last year’s Saudi Cup hero received a tribute for a glorious 23-start career. Xtina took home Panama City’s G1 Clásico Año Nuevo on New Year’s Day while Pacholli secured G1 G P Ciudad de Montevideo; a second champion for Uruguay. 

Beach Bomb, at the Paddock Stakes, became the second one to earn a berth at Breeders’ Cup. The champion beat Princess Calla , South Africa’s reigning Horse of the Year, by a neck to start the season well. For the last of the carousel, it was Waitak. The 4-year-old, took home the G1 Railway Stakes of New Zealand, becoming 1st G1 winner of the year. With first week starting with a spectacle, there’s more to go for the horse racing community.

More in store for horse racing

The immediate biggest event for horse racing would be the 2024 Pegasus World Cup on the 27th of January. The race ground, Gulfstream Park, for the event will further continue with schedules until the end of March. While Tampa Bay Downs extends it until May, Santa Anita has it booked till June 16th.

Moreover, the Kentucky Derby is all set to make its 150th appearance while connection to Ascot takes center stage. The prep races for the same added on by the Breeders’ Cup further keep the calendars booked and busy.
