As much as the last-moment victories are memorable, the redemption win after a spell of bad form is even more mouth-watering for horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners alike. As the year’s first horse racing Saturday approached, the veteran horse Fast Buck was etching to stage a stellar comeback. So he did it in an exhilarating fashion, and his trainer couldn’t contain the joy.
Despite the initial disappointment yesterday due to waterlogging on the Sandown track, the first Saturday racing of the year saw Fast Buck secure a victory after months of dry spells. And now in a post-race interview, the assistant trainer reflects on the confidence.

Despite a series of victories at the start of 2023, as 2024 approached, Fast Buck’s pace kept dropping. However, the dawn of the new year could be the start of another stellar campaign for the 10-year-old. Especially after the dominant victory at Wincanton, he could get back his self-confidence, and so is the opinion of assistant trainer Chester Williams.

In an interview with ITV Racing, Williams expressed his joy after the Fast Buck’s first Chase win of the year. “It worked out perfectly today“, he expressed. When asked whether this victory could get back his self-confidence, Williams replied, “Yeah, I think so“. He further argued that last year similar things happened as Fast Buck went berserk after finishing 2nd in the season-opening race at Sandown. With a multitude of events lined up next, the Kendargent sired is expected to better last season’s illustrious run of form.

With redemption in his eyes, Fast Buck combined perfectly with equestrian jockey Hector I. Berrios to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Daytona Stakes in May 2023. The star duo outpaced the Whatmakessammyrun and Joe Bravo combo on the outside of Santa Anita Park. But he later suffered a wind surgery, forcing him to a months-long break.

He then returned in October at Kempton but couldn’t get back to his winning form. A fifth-place finish was followed by a 3rd and another fifth-place finish in November and December respectively at Sandown turf. Now, as he redeems himself, can he produce another exhilarating season for horse racing enthusiasts?
