Colorado Avalanche’s victory over the Washington Capitals on 24th January was a red-letter day. On the monumental occasion, both the team and head coach Jared Bednar achieved an important milestone. This was the Avalanche’s 266th victory under the leadership of Bednar. Not only this, he completed mentoring the Colorado Avalanche for 500 games in the NHL, with this win. In a post-match conference, Bednar disclosed his true feelings on the memorable occasion. 

Giving his frank opinion on the game, Bednar shared his unique experience of training the team. The former player had coached the hockey team for more than three years, also leading them to their third Stanley Cup victory in June 2022. Along with his views on the team, the experienced coach also gave his strong perspective on the league.

Talking about how glad he was on the game’s completion, the Associated Press reports how Bednar was critical of the Colorado Avalanche’s performance. “We didn’t play our best game tonight, but I’m happy that we were able to get the two points”, said the 50-year-old.

Later, the Avalanche’s head coach shared his anxiety about the fact that there was “a fine line between winning and losing.”  Evidently, any misses or slips could turn a probable win into a loss, inviting criticism. According to Bednar, “This isn’t a forgiving league.”

His perspective was, “It’s a results-oriented league.”  Mentioning that coaches would be changed quickly if there were no good results, Bednar expressed his gratitude for being allowed to coach the Colorado Avalanches team. “They’ve shown me a lot of trust”, he stated.

Afterward, pointing out how it was a young team, Bednar shared how there were changes in the staff and internal evaluation. Some players, such as Darcy Kuemper, were dropped and the team was rebuilt. In Bednar’s view, the team was rebuilt “a lot quicker”, proving many people’s expectations wrong. However, Bednar is not the only ice hockey coach who has hit the headlines. Another coach, John Tortorella, who trains the Philadelphia Flyers is now in the news due to a very peculiar rule.

The experienced coach decided to limit the use of Ipads by players when there were ongoing hockey games. His reasoning was, “You cannot understand the momentum of the game if you are constantly looking at the Ipad.”  However, this decision could probably have a negative impact on players. 

Regularly analyzing their performance and errors via Ipad, the players would not be able to use technology effectively during games. Fans were also divided on this decision, leading to a flood of comments on Tortorella’s strange rule.
