The world?s greatest Olympian, Michael Phelps, is not only a man with a dozen gold medals but also a man with a golden heart. After a glorious career as an athlete, the magnanimous 23-time Olympic medalist has been involved in philanthropic activities, giving back to society.
The pandemic phase during 2020 saw a burgeoning number of issues with hunger and mental health. Phelps, as a good Samaritan, played a role in supporting Feeding America.

To address the difficulties faced by people struggling with hunger and provide access to food, Olympians in swimming and gymnastics, Phelps and Aly Raisman partnered with a vegan soy milk brand. Along with ‘Silk’, they made a $150,000 donation to ?Feeding America? to support its hunger-relief effort and provide 1.5 million meals to people who need them the most.
Michael Phelps realized how essential food was
To endorse the benefits of plant-based milk, Phelps agreed to be the face of Silk?s soy milk line. Phelps said that he had enjoyed soymilk for years and was excited to work with Silk. Moreover, he was glad to contribute to supporting Feeding America, a nonprofit organization with over 200 food banks that feeds over 45 million people.
Referring to the pandemic phase, he said, “this period of slowing down has reminded me about the importance of both physical and mental health, and how food plays such an essential role in our daily life. Both Silk and I realize how important it is to keep everyone fueled, and we are proud to help support people in need during these challenging times.”
He added they were proud to help support people during these difficult times posed with unique challenges. Also, Phelps joined hands with Colgate for the Colgate Optimism Project. It aimed at helping the homeless get access to food and to provide some personal protective gear.
Phelps felt devastated reading about suicides
The swimming legend has always been vocal about battling depression, and anxiety and the importance of seeking professional help. In a 2021 interview, he said the pandemic unfolded the grave nature of mental health issues. He said that mental health was a vast subject and there?s a lot to learn or speak about. ?That was something I was very afraid of,” he said.

He continued how helpless he feels when he reads about suicides, ?It honestly destroys me.? Adding to it, he said there are other outlets that one can take and try to learn more referring to choices other than suicide.

Phelps also emphasized sharing one?s thoughts and feelings. Furthermore, he said that getting one’s thoughts and feelings out in the open is something that changed his life.
Despite having retired from the sport years ago, Phelps continues to inspire people through his philanthropy. From rewriting record books to sharing the most intimate experience of his life in hopes of motivating others to do the same, he remains a legend.
