News of crashes from the Beijing Olympics continue to come in thick and fast; getting scarier by the second. One of the most terrifying reports came in on Monday when alpine ski athlete Nina O’Brien crashed during the giant slalom event.

Even though the event remains her specialty, and one in which she was expected to bring the medal home for team USA, she fell at the final turn. Reportedly, O’Brien is responding to the medics and better news may just be around the corner for the athlete.

Shiffrin wrote on Twitter, “she showed so much heart and fire today and it got shredded to pieces on the final turn.” O’Brien certainly was enjoying a solid run in the event prior to her crash. Nina O’Brien suffers serious injury

Mikaela Shiffrin saw a similar crash earlier in the day, although did not suffer a fate quite as harsh as O’Brien. It appears that the reason for the crash was that O’Brien might’ve lost her footing after passing the gate. An awkward landing with both feet apart in a precarious position could’ve what led to the injury. The exact nature of the injury is unknown.
