News of crashes from the Beijing Olympics continue to come in thick and fast; getting scarier by the second. One of the most terrifying reports came in on Monday when alpine ski athlete Nina O’Brien crashed during the giant slalom event.
Even though the event remains her specialty, and one in which she was expected to bring the medal home for team USA, she fell at the final turn. Reportedly, O’Brien is responding to the medics and better news may just be around the corner for the athlete.

Mikaela Shiffrin wishes Nina on a well fought run
Mikaela Shiffrin, who had suffered a crash too earlier in the day, took to Twitter to wish Nina O’Brien after her crash. Teammates are often those that help most in situations like these, mainly because they understand the pain most realistically. Shiffrin stated that she was “heartbroken” to see Nina do so well and crash out only on the last turn.
We are so heartbroken for Nina… she showed so much heart and fire in her skiing today, and it all got shredded to pieces on the final turn. This sport… this sport is SO damn hard. It’s brutal, and it hurts- far more often than it ever feels good. 🤍🙏 pic.twitter.com/9X9llLPVZ0

Shiffrin wrote on Twitter, “she showed so much heart and fire today and it got shredded to pieces on the final turn.” O’Brien certainly was enjoying a solid run in the event prior to her crash. In a screengrab from her Instagram, we can see Mikaela as an athlete relate with Nina. Mikaela said, “She will get back stronger and speedier than ever.”
Nina O’Brien suffers serious injury
Mikaela Shiffrin saw a similar crash earlier in the day, although did not suffer a fate quite as harsh as O’Brien. It appears that the reason for the crash was that O’Brien might’ve lost her footing after passing the gate. An awkward landing with both feet apart in a precarious position could’ve what led to the injury. The exact nature of the injury is unknown.

Medics have told that O’Brien was conscious and responsive after having stayed down for several minutes.?They have preliminary analysis that the injury may be a broken leg. O’Brien has been rushed to a nearby medical facility for more detailed scans.
