That male gymnastics is a dying sport in the United States is a commonly held belief. Well, Colt Walker, a senior from Stanford, is here to prove the naysayers otherwise. The 23-year-old was honored with the Nissen-Emery Award in 2024. For those who do not know, the Nissen-Emery is the highest honor in college gymnastics. Walker is an inspiration. When everyone thought his stellar gymnastics career was over, thanks to a grave injury, Colt Walker turned around and proved that he was far from being done. He was not even close to being done!

The Texas native has accomplished quite a lot at his young age. Besides the Nissen-Emery Award, he has had an illustrious career. He has constantly proved his mettle as an incredible individual gymnast and a mind-blowing team player. To add yet another accomplishment to his seemingly never-ending list, he is also a mechanical engineer in the making from Stanford! Moreover, one cannot help but admire his perseverance and discipline by looking at his NCAA career.

The Stanford Cardinal Men’s Gymnastics team has won 11 NCAA National Championships, most recently in 2024. As a sophomore in 2022, he won the NCAA All-American title in the parallel bars event. He repeated this win in 2024. He is truly the face of contemporary men’s gymnastics. Worried about the sport’s fate, Stephen Nedoroscik dedicated his DWTS performance to men’s gymnastics: “There’s definitely extra motivation to this dance, because I want to make sure I represent men’s gymnastics well.” Well, Stephen has no reason to fret. With the likes of Colt, the future of men’s gymnastics in America is certainly in good hands!

For Colt, gymnastics is nothing less than an expression of creative energy. As he has shared with the official US Gymnastics page, “It is an artistic outlet for me.” Cold has a solid reason for getting involved in gymnastics: “My parents thought it would be a safer place for me to do flips instead of off our couches.” Without such love for what you do, it is unlikely you could excel at it and persist come what may. After a grave injury, when everyone else thought Colt Walker’s gymnastic career was finished, he emerged stronger than ever!

Have an interesting take?

In October 2022, he received the opportunity to compete at the World Championships alongside other big names such as Asher Wong, Brody Malone, Stephen Nedoroscik, and Donnell Whittenburg. Although Colt finished 14th on parallel bars during qualifications, he did not get the chance to compete in the finals. However, returning from a short break following the World Championships, Walker suffered a serious setback.

In December 2022, the Texas native ran into trouble while attempting basics on the floor. A bulging disk between L5 and S1 was a serious concern and held the potential to cut his career short! The injury was after all no little joke. On the morning of his MRI, Colt apparently could not even feel his leg. But as he was recovering, he quietly resolved that if he got the opportunity to do floors again, he would seize it. He would “put on a show.”
