Victoria Nguyen is the definition of a gymnast with flair, precision, flexibility, and that undeniable wow factor. Victoria has been a force in gymnastics, a veteran of the Georgia and Florida Gators teams. Having competed for the NCAA title three times and having won three All-American titles, she has now become an icon. She also has served for the Team USA senior and junior level and showcased her talent in the 2016-17 and 2014-15 seasons. And get this–she was trained by the former coach of none other than Simone Biles.
Having just completed her Florida graduation, the gymnastic world is waiting to see what she will be doing next. Victoria was impressive in the 2017 World Cup in London and has a fan base that continues to grow. Now, she is working towards her master’s degree and still is affiliated with the Florida Gators. Some are even speculating that she could come back as a fifth-year player. But behind all these accomplishments is the steady, loving support of her parents, who’ve been her biggest cheerleaders. Eleven hours on the road—that’s a long haul for most. But for 10-year-old Asian American, Victoria Nguyen and her mom, Nikki, it was just another adventure in their gymnastics journey. While other kids might be heading to theme parks or family outings, Victoria and Nikki were chasing dreams, moving from one state to the other in search of the ideal gym. It wasn’t just about gymnastics; it was about finding a home for a girl who didn’t even begin flipping and tumbling until she was eight. And when Chow’s Gymnastics in West Des Moines, Iowa, came into the picture, it was love at first sight—or, at least, first cartwheel.
“He (Chow) said ‘I never know who’s really committed to it,’” said Nikki. “He said, ‘if you and your mom are crazy enough to drive hours just to come see us, I can see your determination. We’d like to offer your spot on the team.’” That determination helped him when Chow offered Victoria to be included in his team after one day of training. The seven Nguyen siblings family and parents Nikki and Tony Nyugen had to be separated for Victoria to pursue her dream but they continued talking on the phone and made it a point to have dinner and play board games together when they were in the same place. “We’re a real tight family,” her brother Kristofer said. So it is true that Victoria Nguyen has a supporting family. But guess what? She is not the only gymnast in the family!

Victoria Nguyen isn’t the only gymnast in the family—her brother, Matthew Nguyen, is also flipping into the limelight. Matthew is now a freshman at Illinois and he knows what it takes to play against top talent. From finishing second at the Elite Team Cup in 2023 to dominating pommel horse and high bar performances in national championships in previous years, this rising star is on his way to making his own name. While their gymnastics journeys are quite different, these siblings are as close as it gets, like two parallel beams.

In September 2023, the duo had fans grinning ear-to-ear with a playful reel on social media. Matthew gamely attempted women’s gymnastics moves, and Victoria, as expected, totally crushed the challenge right alongside him. Through thick and thin, on or off the mat, the Nguyen clan remains rock-solid, proving that no matter where life takes them, family always sticks the landing.
