Over the past couple of months, Olympic gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik has mesmerized fans with his dancing skills. Joining hands with pro dancer Rylee Arnold, the 25-year-old pommel horse specialist has shown a side of himself that fans had no idea about previously. Rylee Arnold has openly shared her experience living with Type 1 diabetes, which she was diagnosed with at the age of 15. The uphill journey began during a competitive dance season in 2020. There, she experienced severe symptoms such as extreme fatigue, frequent urination, constant thirst, and difficulty waking up. The symptoms culminated in a dangerous episode after consuming a carb-heavy meal, leading to hospitalization and a blood sugar reading of 1,023—an alarmingly high level that put her at risk of a diabetic coma.
Arnold’s diagnosis required significant lifestyle adjustments. Using a glucose monitor and careful planning, she has been able to manage her condition while continuing her dancing passion. Rylee closely monitors her blood sugar levels regularly, particularly during high-stress performances. To mitigate the issue, she has strategies in place, such as limiting carbohydrates before shows and keeping quick-energy snacks on hand during rehearsals. Thankfully, her family has stepped up to help her every step of the way.
Her mother remains actively involved in monitoring Rylee’s glucose levels remotely, while her sister, a nurse, was instrumental in her initial care. This kind of family support network allows her to focus on the demanding schedule as a dancer. Arnold views her diagnosis as a transformative experience that has taught her resilience and prioritized health and family. Now, Rylee uses her platform to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes.
